WikiLeaks and Whistleblowers

The whistleblowers article I picked is one on (business insider) about how three people go on trial in Luxembourg on Tuesday over the LuxLeaks scandal that exposed the country's huge tax breaks for major international companies. the scandal was exposing deals that saved firms like Apple, IKEA and Pepsi billions of dollars in taxes while European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker was Luxembourg's prime minister.

I think they did right by exposing this news because we as people have rights to know what the government is doing they shouldn't be hiding stuff from the public. I think its good that they came up with the LuxLeaks scandal that exposed the countrys huge tax breaks for major international companies because most the time they talk about stuff that it is good for us to know about.

I think that what this people are doing is great because they help expose stuff that we should know and what they are trying to hid.

Caught in Lies

No I never consider if the news that the news I read is factually incorrect or even fabricated because I always assume that if it is on the news it is  factually I don't usually consider if the news is factually incorrect.  The two articles made sense to me that they were fabricated. I agree that  some people convince themselves that what they are saying is true then try to make other people think  that what you made up is the truth. I  believe that schools and universities should make sure graduating journalism students can deal with the type of stuff that is going to be  doing as a journalist. They will need to use the types of skills from the article when they are out in the real world.

Hard News vs. Soft News

Nursing homes 'intending to leave' Toronto over rebuilding costs  (Hard News)

This article I picked is about 14 nursing homes that are going to leave Toronto. I think this is hard news because it is a big concern for about 1800 residents that are in the nursing homes and wont have a home to be in no more. This is hard new because it is a story that is a big topic and you would see it on the front of a newspaper because it affects a lot of people.

Justin Timberlake invited back to Super Bowl halftime show

This article is about how the singer Justin Timberlake is invited back to the super bowl half time show i think this is soft new because its a topic that people who like his singing or like the super bowl would only see it doesn't stand out as breaking new its news for your entertainment.

Stranger Things actor Charlie Heaton denied US entry over drugs

I think this is blurred news because it talks about how Charlie Heaton had cocaine was found in his suitcase. This is blurred news because only his family and people who like the actor Charlie Heaton would know about this.

Timing - 4/4
This is a news story that has been in the public eye since October 20 2017. It is the latest update letting us know that 300 people died in US done strike. I gave it a 4/4 on timing, because it let us know when it happened right on the day it happened.

Significance - 3/4
i think it is significance because there was 300  people killed and 400 people injured. It has grabbed the attention to everyone around the world.

Proximity - 3/4
The geographical proximity is not close for a Canadian reader, but Canadians can connect to this story because the US did this and the US is close to us. It is a story we hope has a happy ending.

Prominence - 2/4
The story has prominence because of the number of people killed. I gave it a lower mark because few would have known who these people were even in their own country, let alone in the world.

Human Interest - 4/4
This story appeals greatly to emotion as people know that the drone strike killed 300 hundred people.

Town Destroyed by tornado

In Storytown there was a tornado that took place last night on October.16 and destroyed the town and left a lot of people without homes.

People in story town where very sad and scared for there lives after the event and will need time to get over what happened to there town last night.

We spook with some of the locals to ask them about what happened that night and James Lark said "We all go ready for the storm and took precaution but our house was still destroyed by the storm but lucky that our whole family left the our home in time and went to the tornado shelter and was all safe".

Also According to the Mayor of Storytown the damage the tornado caused was huge and would cost over 1 million dollars to rebuild the town,.

Even after the great storm that whipped out the town, the whole town is going to have to come together to work to help rebuild the town back the way it was before the tornado that happened last night.

After the storm last night

Starting with the Basics

Two men have been sentenced long prison terms for importing several thousand kilos of cocaine into Canada Ontario. they was sentenced because they brought in nearly 2,500 kilos of cocaine into Ontario in 2013 . Yes I think the lead is effective because it gets straight to the point and tells you all the information u need to know.  Niagara Regional Police spokesman Phil Gavin said “large scale drug investigation”. Yes the most important information is told first because the first thing they said is two men sentenced long prison terms for importing a lot of cocaine into Canada. Yes the story has a good ending because it raps up the whole story and said when the two men got arrested in September 2014.

Melanie Stambaugh campaigned for reelection, ran into a problem with Facebook and is now being slammed with 44 ethics violations. Melanie is accused of violating campaign finance laws by posting videos of herself serving in the State House, the ethics board said it violated campaign and fined her $35,000. Yes this lead is effective because it gets right to the point and tells you all the information you need to know. This segment originally aired Sept. 12, 2017, on VICE News Tonight on HBO.  Yes the most important information is told first because it said how Melanie got fined 35000 for fines. Reflection Entry #1 – First Newspapers

When I was looking at the first newspaper and comparing it to the ones you see today they are different but kinda look the same. First there is no pictures or bold heading. The pages look the same to the ones we have.

No I don't think the government should have that much control over what the news should be like. For me the news is about stuff going on around you that is important. The government doesn't always want us to see the truth but we need to see the truth sometimes.

I think it is important to the government and businesses. Because we need to see the reality of things. It is not all the time people want to go to there favorite spot to hang out and get something to eat and hear it has something wrong with it or is getting shut down. When there is something about the government in the new paper and they do not want people to see it they can shut that new paper down.
People want to see things for how bad they are but people should really be looking at the good side of things and not look for gossip and bad things all the time.

No i wasn't surprised that the first newspaper was in Halifax because it is a big city and a lot of people in the city would see it and support it.
